Carrier Ethernet Service Definitions

MEF EVC (Ethernet Virtual Connection) Services Specifications

  • MEF 10.3 - This is the "ingredients" of the service with regard to what can go into the EVC. These are the "UNI Service Attributes and Parameters" that offer the SERVICES defined in MEF 6.2

  • MEF 6.2 - This is the "recipe" that defines the Ethernet Services Types (E-Line, E-LAN, and E-TREE)

REMEMBER - An Ethernet Service consists of the following

  • Ethernet Service Type

  • Ethernet Service Attributes

  • Ethernet Service Attribute Parameters

User Network Interface (UNI)

  • The UNI is defined as:

    • The physical demarcation POINT between the responsibility of the Service Provider and the responsibility of the Subscriber

    • Subscriber connects to the CEN at the UNI

    • Subscriber sends and receives Service Frames to and from the CEN

    • Service Frame format must be standard IEEE 802.3 EThernet Frames

Ethernet Virtual Connection (EVC)

  • An EVC is defined as:

    • The association of 2 or more UNI's that limits the exchange of Service Frames to the UNI's in the EVC
